Modern Drama on TV

Tony Klinger - Friday 28.11.08, 16:45pm

Sitting in the neat little British restaurant with some friends yesterday we got around to discussing modern television drama. I should preface this by saying that my two friends, like myself, are all old time professional film production technicians. So, a little bit, we know of what we talk.

We had all, individually come to the same conclusion, that sound recording for television drama today is of a very poor quality. Also there seems either to be not enough lighting used for the night sequences to be visible or the lighting technicians don’t quite know how to go about their business.

Before you can say you are a bunch of old timers who probably can’t see or hear too well or you wouldn’t have a problem with the quality of either let me tell I double checked these findings with many of the younger people I have encountered and they all feel the same way.

Memo to the production people on British and American television (same problems, just different accents) turn up the sound and lighting!

I also have an admission to make. I like trash television as well as the good quality stuff. I am happy to admit that I love the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing and Simon Cowell’s X Factor and their American spin offs when I stay at my American family’s home. In fact I am hooked and proud of it. How can you not laugh at and with these people as they suffer, stagger and choke through their torture. It’s just the latest form of the Roman Circus and it’s certainly less dangerous than slinging people in with lions or tigers, well just!

The other big plus is that the lighting is Technicolor bright and the sound is crystal clear.
